Chris Christie: Cool by association?

New Jersey elects its governor and legislature on odd-numbered years, so the endless campaign is extended into 2009 in the Garden State. Given the horrendous condition of the state's finances, which long antedates the decline in the economy, the Republicans certainly ought to be able to win. Or, put differently, if they cannot win here this year you have to wonder whether they ever can again.

Anyway, the leading candidate for the Republican nomination is a prosecutor, Chris Christie, who has made a name for himself busting corrupt politicians and criminal businesses. Like all post-Obama politicians, Christie has a Facebook page, screencap below:

Cool by association

I wonder how Bruce Springsteen feels about that? Given his politics, I think it is fair to say he is not amused. But then, it is Springsteen's burden and blessing that no politician in New Jersey can get elected without claiming to be his fan, even if the love is unrequited.

Somehow I doubt what New Jersey needs is a prosecutor for a governor. He better start explaining how to pull NJ back from the brink of becoming California.

NJ is arguably already worse than CA.

I am certain that a Republican can't win in NJ, and in the unlikely event he did anything approaching a conservative bent will be shot down immediately, as all of Scharzenegger's initiatives did. Eventually said governor will be ground down and revert to standard liberalism, if he had any real conservative principles to begin with.

Everything goes in cycles and New Jersey is such a mess that people will be looking for something different, but a trial lawyer ain't different.

The guy to watch is Mayor Steve Lonegan www.lonegan.com.

You would think the GOP can hardly lose, but they'll figure out a way to pull it off. If Christie called for a Colorado style tax limitation, he'd win hands down. Ignore everything else- just talk constitutional tax limits over and over. Something the legislature can't game or take away. Did I say win? Heck, he'd be elected king.
