A local mecca

Last week a reader sent me a link to the NYT's slideshow of the Princeton Record Exchange, a nationally-famous local store devoted to vinyl and other specialties. Found it digging through the 10,000 emails in my inbox, and thought that those among you who know the place might enjoy it.

Nice! As someone who has built whole weekends around getting to good record stores, I have special and distinctive memories of the Princeton Record Exchange. Like finding the 12 inch of "Ghost Town" by the Specials, and Matt Johnson's "Burning Blue Soul."

Princeton Record Exchange makes my personal record store hall of fame, joining Smash, Venus Records, Bleeker Bob's, Janes, and Moon Records, (all in NYC), and The Record Archive and The House of Guitars in Rochester, NY.

Good stuff, TH, thanks for the memories.

So the PREX opened in 1980? I didn't realize how lucky I was; I started PU in 1981. So I remember PREX when it was on Nassau Street.

Trivia: The guy who worked there sang in a local band called "Will to Live," which I saw open for The Fall at Trenton City Gardens, I think, in 1984. The PREX guy was curled up on the stage floor, howling, with the mike shoved into his mouth, as the percussionist swung heavy bars against a 55-gal drum. Powerful show.
