Good news and bad news from Cuba

The good news: Fidel Castro, who has not appeared in public in 19 months, has resigned. The bad news: Nobody thinks it will matter much to the people of Cuba, either symbolically or substantively.

Good Lord what did you expect? That the people would suddenly give up free health care and schools, embrace Dancing with the Stars and The Flavor of Love 3, SUVs, menial jobs in new casinos that Caucasian Cubans yearn to resurrect (hey, let's dig up "Michael Corleone," and "Hyman Roth" too hahahaha). Yeah, foks might want some 70 inch LCD TVs and "Madden Football" on Wii. But aside from that, Cuba's not going back to 1959. The trick is to evolve and integrate--with deliberation, with respect. The bigshots in Miami just smell the quick money and exploitation like the robber barons who've shat all over post-Communist Russia and other eastern bloc nations, and the current whay of doing "business" in China. undertsand
