The first person plural American-style

The reluctance of journalists who carry American passports to think of themselves as Americans is perhaps the single ugliest attribute of any profession. Or it would be if journalism actually were a profession.

CWCID: Glenn Reynolds.

I've said this before - many, many times - and it's a cinch I'll be given numerous opportunites to say it again before the day I assume room temperature: If Katie Couric were any more dense, light could not escape her.

Unfortunately this a byproduct of globalization. After the launch of CNN International, Ted Turner reportedly fined his TV newsmen for using the word "foreign" on the air.

Along with NGOs, American businessmen started the trend in the U.S. years ago. The businesspeople had to deal with the "Ugly American" image problem. You couldn't sell products in dozens of different cultures if you maintained a strong national identity. For anyone in the global marketplace, it was easier to be a "citizen of the world." It still is.

Remember: American exports create American jobs.

Citizen of the world, my ass. I was born in Chicago in a Catholic hospital. Got a problem with that?

Yes, journalism is in the same category as the world's oldest profession.

zhombre. I have no problem with that, but last time I looked at a world map Chicago was on the world map, and the Pope is a German based in Rome.
It is always easy to push parochial buttons, but is news or journalism

Chicago is the headquarters city of Boeing, America's biggest exporter.

"Jingo sells, Jingo sells,
Jingo sells the war.
At least it did when Yellow Kid
Sold newspapers galore!

Nowadays, Katie says,
We're on to that game.
Don't confuse the evening news
with 'Remember the Maine!'

William Randolph Hearst,
Has our profession cursed.
Deep Throat got Bernstein's goat
And Woodward's hack is worse!
Impartiality,
Our motto let it be,
Or Citizen Kane may ride again
from Sea to Shining Sea!

Oh, Jingo Bells, Jingo Bells
Who needs them at all?
Black and White is all we write
At advertising's call.

Never fret, don't forget
what journalism's for:
'You give me the pictures
And I'll give you the war!'"

Katie Couric is a fool.

Look no further than the ratings for her news show.

Hehe. Nice lyrics, Tim.
